Warrant Officer William Scott, MM

 

William Scott was born in Arvagh, County Cavan. He was either the William Scott born at Tycusker on 23 January 1892, one of nine children of farmer John Scott and his wife Margaret (nee Walker), or the William Thomas Scott born on 22 December 1888 at Corlespratten, son of farmer Robert Scott and his wife Mary (nee Anderson).

Scott enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 12 October and 12 November 1909 (No.413 – later Corps of Hussars No.71023).

He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action in the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

Scott remained with A Squadron throughout the war, rising to the rank of warrant officer class 2. He was one of two member of the regiment awarded a Military Medal for gallantry during the German offensive in March 1918.

Scott was transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve, on 17 March 1919.
